How Will This Work at Your School?
We will obtain the number of children enrolled in the school by grade and by teacher. This is usually obtained from the school list.
We then prepare packets, in appropriate languages, to go home in the child’s backpack. The packet includes an introductory letter, a medical history and an informed consent form. The packets go home with the children at the beginning of the school year. However, we will work with the school to determine the best method for distributing the packets.
We will schedule the appropriate number of days to visit the school based on the number of children enrolled. Approximately one week before our scheduled visit, the packets are collected and reviewed by Polished LLC Health Care for completion. We will contact the parent if there is any more information we need from them.
On the day of the visit, a team of licensed dental professionals will arrive at the school with all necessary supplies and equipment. In addition, we have a patient care coordinator who will coordinate the appropriate times for the children to be seen.
The child will never be out of the classroom for more than 30 minutes. The child will receive a dental exam, cleaning, fluoride, sealants, health education, a health report for their parents, and a toothbrush and toothpaste. At the end of each day, the school nurse is notified of any urgent dental care issues and is also provided with a copy of each child’s oral health report.
After all the enrolled children have been seen, we will remove all the equipment and restore the room to its original condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Either a dental hygienist or a dentist check all of the teeth in the child’s mouth for the presence of dental disease (cavities) and gum disease. This is done using a disposable mirror and explorer. All of the findings are written in the child’s chart.
We also check all of the child’s soft tissues (lips, cheeks, tongue) for any abnormalities and notes them in the child’s record.
In addition, the child is asked
1) if they have any problems with their teeth they would like to talk about and
2) if the child understands what we will be doing at the visit.
What is an Oral Prophylaxis (Tooth Cleaning)?
The dental hygienist will provide a cleaning for each enrolled child. This consists of debridement of soft deposits, scaling of hard deposits when necessary, and selective polishing to remove stains.
Sealants are easy to apply, and it takes only a few minutes to seal each tooth. The sealant is ‘painted’ onto the tooth. Sometimes a special curing light is used to help the sealant harden.
Dental sealants act as a barrier, protecting the teeth against decay-causing bacteria. The sealants are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where decay occurs most often.
Fluoride varnish provides a concentrated, temporary dose of fluoride to the tooth surface. The varnish holds fluoride close to the tooth surface for a longer period of time than other concentrated fluoride products. Unlike low-dose fluorides available over the counter, fluoride varnish must be applied by a healthcare professional.
